SCENE 1
BRADDOCK HEIGHTS, MARYLAND; APRIL 27; 10:16 PM=20

(A nice clear night. In the forest, Joseph Patnik toils with his shovel= ,=20 digging a hole. Light shines dimly through the trees. He grunts with every= dig,=20 then looks at the body in front of him.)=20

JOSEPH PATNIK: All right, you bastard.=20

(He starts to drag the man towards the hole. The man has a massive gash= on=20 his head.)=20

Evil... rotten... son of a...=20

(The man slides into the shallow grave Patnik has made. Patnik picks up= the=20 shovel and starts to cover him with dirt.)=20

There you go! Your killing days are over!=20

(Back at his house, Patnik struggles to wash the blood off his hands an= d=20 arms. He hears a noise and looks behind him to see the same dead man walki= ng=20 towards him. Patnik gasps.)=20

No... no!=20

(The man smirks.)=20

No!=20

(Patnik picks up the shovel and smashes the man in the head with it. Th= e man=20 is shoved into Patnik's trunk as a dog barks. Hearing a car pull up, Patni= k=20 turns to see a police car pull up and stop. Two officers get out, their fa= ces=20 not shown.)

OFFICER #1: Put your hands in the air. Keep them where I can see th= em.=20

(Patnik does so. The officers approach him.)=20

We got a call. You want to tell us what you're doing out here?=20

(The first officer steps into sight. He is the same dead man. Patnik lo= oks at=20 the second officer, who is the same man as well, smirking.)=20

Sir?=20

(Patnik angrily rushes the first officer, tackling him. They grunt and = the=20 second officer runs towards them. Patnik stands and goes to punch the seco= nd=20 officer but is hit in the gut with a taser. He screams from the charge and= =20 falls, holding his chest and grunting. Looking up at the first officer, wh= o is=20 holding a gun on him, the officer's face "shorts out" like an electronic=20 holographic device. Eventually, the officer's real face is shown to be a h= eavier=20 mustached man as Patnik looks on in horror. The second officer, also looki= ng=20 differently in Patnik's eyes now, kneels over Patnik.)

OFFICER #2: Turn over.=20

(Patnik does so and is handcuffed.)=20

Damn amp-head.=20

(He stands Patnik up. The first officer opens the trunk.)

OFFICER #1: Oh lord... Jimmy, check this out.=20

(The officer, with Patnik in tow, looks in the trunk. The man is no lon= ger=20 there, his true identity that of a beautiful blonde woman, dead.)=20

JOSEPH PATNIK: Sarah?=20

(Patnik recognizes her as his wife.)=20

SCENE 2
WASHINGTON, D.C.; APRIL 29; 2:12 AM=20

(Mulder sits in his car, watching two men talk. One of the men walks of= f. A=20 man in a suit gets in the car.)=20

MULDER: Our blind date's not off to a good start. I've been wait= ing=20 here nearly two hours.=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: I was asked to make sure you weren't followed= .=20

MULDER: It's just you, me, and the drug dealers.=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: This area's always been known for it's crimin= al=20 element.=20

MULDER: Especially when Congress is in session.=20

(The man hands Mulder a newspaper with an article in the front with the= =20 headline "Braddock Heights Man Kills Wife, Four Others." Underneath is a p= icture=20 of Joseph Patnik in a prison photo.)=20

What's this?=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: Something you'll want to follow.=20

MULDER: Follow where?=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: That's all I have for you.=20

MULDER: What do you mean, that's all you have for me? I get an=20 anonymous e-mail to come meet you here in the middle of the night, I don't= know=20 who you are or what you want.=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: I don't have any obligation or desire to give= you=20 any answers. I'm not one of your sources.=20

MULDER: Then you're just a messenger boy?=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: It's late, Agent Mulder. Go home. Get some sl= eep.=20

MULDER: Who told you to contact me? How do I know I'm not being= =20 played?=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: I guess you don't.=20

(He gets out. Mulder crumples up the newspaper and throws it at him.)=20

MULDER: Well, then you can go ahead and recycle that, then.=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: I've been asked to tell you... you walk away = from=20 this, more people will die.=20

(He closes the door and walks away. Mulder stares down at the paper.)=20




SCENE 3
FREDERICK COUNTY PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL; BRADDOCK HEIGHTS,=20 MARYLAND=20

(Joseph Patnik sits in a basically empty room, staring blankly at the=20 television hung from the ceiling. Mulder watches him through the room's wi= ndow.=20 Scully walks over to him.)=20

SCULLY: Sorry, I would've gotten here sooner but the Beltway was= a=20 parking lot. What's going on?=20

MULDER: Multiple homicide, a bizarre one. That's Joseph Patnik. = He=20 murdered five people, all of whom he insists was the same man.=20

SCULLY: What do you mean?=20

MULDER: Well, he claims to have been killing the same man over a= nd=20 over again, that he wouldn't die.=20

SCULLY: Does he have a history of mental illness?=20

MULDER: Not that I know, but I only just got this case yesterday= .=20

SCULLY: So, what's the X-File?=20

MULDER: In Patnik's neighborhood two weeks ago, a baby-sitter at= tacked=20 the two children she was minding. She told the police she thought they wer= e=20 wolves.=20

SCULLY: And police found no other motive for either of these att= acks?=20

MULDER: Not so far, no.=20

(Doctor Stroman walks up to him.)=20

STROMAN: Agent Mulder? Hi, I'm Doctor Stroman.=20

(Mulder turns around and shakes his hand.)=20

MULDER: Doctor Stroman, this is my partner, Special Agent Scully= .=20

(Scully shakes hands with him.)=20

SCULLY: Hi.=20

STROMAN: Hello.=20

SCULLY: You're the physician in charge?=20

STROMAN: Yeah, they called me in from D.C. to try and develop a = clear=20 diagnosis for the court.=20

MULDER: Have you?=20

STROMAN: I wish I could say "yes."=20

SCULLY: Has he been sedated?=20

STROMAN: I've got him on heavy thorazine, but it only seemed to = knock=20 him back a notch or two.=20

MULDER: He seems pretty manageable to me.=20

(Stroman looks at Patnik briefly.)=20

STROMAN: It may be some form of organic delusional syndrome, pos= sibly=20 due to chronic metamphetamine abuse. I don't know, but, uh, he is prone to= =20 outbursts.=20

MULDER: Who called you down on this case?=20

STROMAN: A Doctor Kahn from the, uh, Department of Social Health= =20 Services.=20

MULDER: Could we speak to him?=20

STROMAN: I don't think he's in today, but I can certainly check = for=20 you.=20

(Patnik screams loudly.)=20

Orderly!=20

(Stroman runs towards the room. Patnik screams again and throws over hi= s=20 chair, then throws over a chair in the corner and sits down as Stroman run= s in=20 with two orderlies, who grab him.)

ORDERLY #1: Take it easy...

ORDERLY #2: Calm down, Mister Patnik.=20

(Mulder and Scully walk in.)=20

JOSEPH PATNIK: No! No! No, no, no! He's here!=20

(The agents look up at the screen.)=20

TELEVISION NEWSCASTER: ...Miriskovic personally ordered the rape= and=20 murder of thousands of innocent civilians in wartorn regions of the former= =20 Yugoslavia. Reporting...=20

(On the screen is a dictator names Miriskovic. He is also the man that = Patnik=20 thought he was killing.)=20




SCENE 4
JOSEPH PATNIK'S HOUSE=20

(Mulder and Scully pull up to Patnik's house. A cable van drives by as = they=20 make their way to the house.)=20

SCULLY: You said you got this case last night, where did it come= from?=20

MULDER: Came from an outside source.=20

SCULLY: Who?=20

(Mulder does not answer, looking down at the floor as he walks.)=20

This outside source, Mulder, what's his interest in this case? What doe= s he=20 want us to uncover?=20

MULDER: I don't know.=20

SCULLY: And you're not suspicious that we're being used?=20

MULDER: We've got dead bodies and confessed murderers. If we're = being=20 used, it's to find out the connection. That's what I'm interested in.=20

(Mulder lifts the yellow tape and the two walk to the door. They enter = the=20 house. A woman screams and they whip out their guns, prepared to walk into= the=20 main room. Mulder peeks in and frowns at Scully. The two then put their gu= ns=20 away and walk in nonchalantly. On the couch are two kids watching televisi= on on=20 the wide-screen.)=20

Isn't this a school day?=20

(The two children stand up, startled, and look at him.)

BOY #1: We didn't cut.

BOY #2: We got a pass.=20

MULDER: You got a pass to come in here and eat these people's fo= od and=20 watch their TV?=20

("Die Hard" is on TV. Bruce Willis jumps off the roof and screams as th= e=20 onlookers watch from the ground. The roof bursts in explosions.)

BOY #1: No.

BOY #2: Are we in trouble now?=20

(Mulder nods slightly.)=20

SCULLY: How'd you get in here?

BOY#1: Through the window. They leave it open for the cat.=20

MULDER: Well, maybe you should head back to school.=20

(The two boys start to the window.)=20

No, no, no, use the front door.=20

(The two boys walk past Mulder and Scully. Mulder pats the second boy o= n the=20 head as they do. Mulder watches the mayhem on television until the picture= =20 suddenly shorts out. He looks out the window to see a cable technician wor= king=20 on the pole, then climbing down.)=20

SCULLY: Mulder.=20

(He walks over to her.)=20

Look at this, there must be hundreds of videos here.=20

(Mulder looks at the racks of videotapes.)=20

MULDER: Anything good?=20

SCULLY: All I see are recordings of cable news shows. They're al= l=20 dated and in chronological order. You know, that's what Patnik was watchin= g at=20 the hospital when he went all wiggy.=20

(Mulder nods.)=20

What if there's some connection?=20

MULDER: Between what he saw and what he recorded and what he did= ?=20

SCULLY: You're the one who's interested.=20

(She pulls out a videotape.)=20




SCENE 5
2400 COURT MOTEL=20

(Mulder is watching a videotape in fast-forward of a trial. On the tabl= e is a=20 can of soda and a large pile of sunflower seed shells. He puts two more sh= ells=20 down and turns off the television. He then gets up and drops the videotape= down=20 onto a very large pile of others. Scully opens the door to her hotel room = and=20 Mulder walks in.)=20

MULDER: I just watched thirty-six hours of Bernard Shaw and Bobb= ie=20 Batista. I'm about ready to kill somebody too.=20

(He lays down. Scully starts over to her television.)=20

SCULLY: I'm going to show you something.=20

(She puts her hand on a pile of tapes. On the floor, there are more sta= cks,=20 as well as another stack on top of the television. Another tape is playing= as=20 well.)=20

These tapes are dated April nineteenth, April twenty-first and April=20 twenty-third. Each corresponds to a night that Patnik committed a murder.= =20

MULDER: What's on the tapes?=20

(Scully sits.)=20

SCULLY: Among other things, a one-hour special report on the=20 atrocities in Bosnia, a report that prominently features Lladoslav Mirisko= vic.=20

MULDER: The same guy that started Patnik screaming in the psych = ward?=20

(She nods.)=20

SCULLY: And my guess is that once I review the tapes for the nig= ht=20 that Patnik killed his wife, that I'll find that report there as well.=20

MULDER: So you think that because Patnik saw this war criminal o= n=20 television, he was somehow inspired to go out and murder these people?=20

SCULLY: Well, recent studies have linked violence on television = to=20 violent behavior.=20

MULDER: Yeah, but those studies are based on the assumption that= =20 Americans are just empty vessels ready to be filled with any idea or image= =20 that's fed to them like a bunch of Pavlov dogs and go out and act on it.=20

SCULLY: But they believe that the causal connections are there,= =20 Mulder.=20

MULDER: They, studies have also shown causal connections between= cow=20 flatulence and the depletion of the ozone layer. What you're talking about= is=20 pseudo-science used to make political book.=20

SCULLY: All I'm saying is that I think it's clear that, that the= =20 programs that Patnik watched somehow triggered his violent behavior.=20

MULDER: How?=20

SCULLY: The doctor suggested amphetamine abuse. Maybe that coupl= ed=20 with, with the disturbing images he was watching, pushed him over the edge= .=20

MULDER: All I know is television does not make a previously sane= man=20 go out and kill five people, thinking they're all the same guy. Not even=20 "Must-See TV" could do that to you.=20

SCULLY: Okay, then how do you explain it?=20

MULDER: I can't. Not yet.=20

(He stands and heads for the door.)=20

SCULLY: Where are you going?=20

MULDER: I'm going to get some sleep. Looks like you could use so= me=20 too.=20

SCULLY: No, I'm going to... watch the rest of these tapes. Just = out of=20 curiosity.=20

MULDER: You have fun.=20

(He leaves. Scully sits down in her chair and presses play. Much later,= =20 Scully continues to watch the tape in fast-forward mode. The phone rings t= hree=20 times but not in Scully's room. Someone picks up the phone. She hears Muld= er=20 talking through the wall from a good distance away.)=20

Yes. I understand. All right. I've just been watching the tapes. I'll c= ome=20 outside. Right. Okay. No, she doesn't. No. Goodbye.=20

(Scully presses stop on her tape and takes a drink of something slowly.= She=20 crunches the ice, staring blankly at the television. Going to the ice mach= ine,=20 she takes a fresh scoop and puts some change into the soda machine. Curios= ly,=20 she looks around the side and sees Mulder sitting in his car, laughing sli= ghtly.=20 A match flares and the Cigarette-Smoking Man, sitting next to him, lights = a=20 cigarette. Scully watches on in horror as Mulder hands him a videotape. A = large=20 van drives by and Scully ducks behind the soda machine. Looking back out, = she=20 sees Mulder and his accomplice drive off.)=20




SCENE 6
APRIL 20; 9:48 AM=20

(Helene Riddock is doing the dishes, listening to music most commonly u= sed by=20 Richard Simmons. She looks over to her television and sees a game show. Sh= e=20 smiles.)=20

GAME SHOW HOST: Before we go any further, I'd like to...=20

(She looks down at the dishwater and the picture of it "shorts out." Sh= e=20 frowns, unsure of what just happened. The water turns to green lines at po= ints,=20 then forms a sort of face as she looks on in horror. She turns around to s= ee her=20 whole kitchen is being invaded by green and red lines in the spectrum. She= looks=20 outside to see her bearded husband on a hammock with a beautiful young wom= an on=20 top of him. As she watches, she leans down and kisses him. Helene runs ove= r to=20 her closet, pulls out her rifle and goes towards the back door. The game s= how=20 continues to play.)=20

This beautiful washer-dryer! Tell them about it, Colonel.=20

GAME SHOW ANNOUNCER: This beautiful washer-dryer...=20

(A shot rings out from the backyard.)=20




SCENE 7
2400 COURT MOTEL=20

(Scully sits, thinking. Mulder knocks on the door.)=20

MULDER: Scully?=20

SCULLY: Yeah.=20

MULDER: I just got a call. There's been another murder.=20

SCULLY: Yeah, I'll be right there.=20

(She doesn't move, thinking about what she saw. Slowly, she makes her w= ay to=20 the car and gets in, then pulls open the ashtray. It is empty. Mulder gets= in.)=20

MULDER: It happened just less than an hour ago. It seems to matc= h our=20 pattern, a housewife gone berserk.=20

SCULLY: The car's been moved. Did you take it out last night?=20

(Mulder buckles his seatbelt.)=20

MULDER: No. Uh, I went out, and I got a paper this morning. Why?= =20

SCULLY: Nothing. Nothing, let's go see the crime scene.=20




SCENE 8
HELEN RIDDOCK'S HOUSE=20

(Officials have swarmed the backyard and the man in the hammock, who no= =20 longer has a beard and whose facial features are different, is now a blood= y mess=20 on the hammock. Scully walks over and looks at the body.)=20

MULDER: Okay, thanks, Detective.=20

DETECTIVE: You're welcome.=20

(Mulder, carrying an umbrella, walks over to Scully.)=20

I just talked to the detective in charge. The shooter is Helene Riddock= , age=20 forty-two. They took her to lock-up.=20

SCULLY: What happened?=20

(They start walking.)=20

MULDER: She looked out the window and claims she saw her husband= in=20 the hammock... with a blonde.=20

(They stop as he points over to a dog barking at them with blondish fur= .)=20

SCULLY: That blonde?=20

MULDER: Yeah, apparently, he was only taking a nap with his dog.= ..=20

(They start walking again.)=20

But Mrs. Riddock swears she looked out the window and saw her husband i= n the=20 hammock with a blonde woman.=20

(They stop walking on the other side of the hammock.)=20

SCULLY: So, this woman killed her husband because she thought he= was=20 cheating on her?=20

MULDER: This is not even her husband. Her husband's a long-haul= =20 trucker. He's been out of town for the last ten days. Mister John Gillness= , it's=20 her next-door neighbor. She didn't even have the right backyard. Helene Ri= ddock=20 lives over here.=20

(He points to the house and starts walking as Scully stares at the body= .=20 Scully watches Mulder suspiciously as Mulder looks back at her.)=20

Scully?=20

SCULLY: Yeah, let's check it out.=20

(Inside the house, the television still plays. This show is part of the= "The=20 Home Value Network." A porcelain knick-knack is being showcased. The statu= e is=20 also sitting on the table next to the couch.)=20

TELEVISION ANNOUNCER: One of my favorites, he is so cute. "The L= ittle=20 Traveler," normally a hundred-and-twenty-nine and that's what you're going= to=20 pay at the department stores, but here at Home Value Network...=20

(Mulder picks up the porcelain statuette and starts to walk to the back= .)=20

MULDER: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever..." what do you thin= k,=20 Scully?=20

SCULLY: I think television plays a large part in both of these=20 murderers' lives.=20

(She walks over and picks up a few pictures.)=20

MULDER: As it does in almost every American home, but television= does=20 not equal violence. I don't care what anybody says...=20

(He picks up an ugly statuette.)=20

Unless you consider bad taste an act of violence.=20

(Scully pulls open a drawer and finds many more videotapes.)=20

SCULLY: More tapes.=20

(Mulder walks over to her. Scully puts a videotape into the VCR.)=20

MULDER: Hang on a second.=20

(He walks to the window and looks outside. The cable van pulls up and t= he=20 technician gets out.)=20

I'll be right back.=20

(As Scully flips through the tape, Mulder runs out the door. He runs to= wards=20 the cable van.)=20

Hey! Hey!=20

(The technician gets in the van and drives off as Mulder gives chase.)= =20

Hey!=20

(Mulder stops and looks back at the pole. Inside, Scully watches the ta= pe=20 with a blank expression. She looks out the window and sees Mulder start to= climb=20 the pole. She then walks out as Mulder opens the cable box on the pole and= sees=20 four transmitters. One is gold, the rest are silver. He takes the gold one= and=20 looks at it as Scully runs over with two police officers.)=20

SCULLY: Mulder, what are you doing?=20

MULDER: I'm coming down.=20

(He starts to climb down.)=20

SCULLY: What is it?=20

MULDER: I found a cable trapper scrambler running from the pole = into=20 the house.=20

SCULLY: Maybe it's a job for Special Agent Pendrell and the Sci-= Crime=20 lab.=20

(Mulder jumps down onto a car. Scully reaches for the device.)=20

You want it analyzed?=20

MULDER: Yeah, I'll do it.=20

(He starts off. Scully is dismayed and puts her hand down.)=20

It makes more sense for you to go down and interview Helene Riddock. Ge= t her=20 version of the story. Maybe she knows what this thing is.=20

(Scully stares at her, very suspicious of Mulder's actions.)=20

Is there a problem with that?=20

SCULLY: No, that's, that's fine, I'm...=20

MULDER: Stay in touch.=20

(He gets in the car and drives off as Scully's fear grows.)=20




SCENE 9
THE LONE GUNMEN'S OFFICE; WASHINGTON, D.C.=20

(Mulder and his informants are gathered around a table where the device= lay=20 on a green board with a device hooked through it.)=20

BYERS: It looks a lot like a standard video trap for blocking pr= emium=20 cable channels.=20

MULDER: What does this one block?=20

LANGLY: Amazingly, it doesn't seem to block anything.=20

MULDER: Then what does it do?=20

FROHIKE: Glad you asked.=20

(He clears his throat as he and Langly walk over to two carts with=20 televisions and VCRs. Byers slides over on his chair and takes a channel c= hanger=20 from Frohike.)=20

MULDER: I bet all you guys were officers in the audio-visual clu= b in=20 high school, huh?=20

LANGLY: Mm-hmmm.=20

(The two televisions are turned on and identical test patterns comes up= .)=20

BYERS: This is the straight feed off our bars and tone generator= ...=20

(He points to the first one.)=20

And here are the bars and tone as attenuated through the device.=20

(He points to the second television.)=20

MULDER: Looks the same.=20

FROHIKE: Well, that's what you'd think.=20

LANGLY: We couldn't discern any difference between the feeds, no= t=20 until we compared them on the oscilloscope.=20

(He and Frohike turn on two small monitors on top of the televisions. T= wo=20 lines come up.)=20

MULDER: Still looks the same.=20

FROHIKE: Hold onto your hat, dude.=20

(He throws two switches and the lines become square blocks. The two mon= itors=20 then scroll down to two more lines. The first is straight, the other is th= ick=20 and shaky.)=20

We have touchdown.=20

MULDER: So they're different.=20

(Langly nods.)=20

So... they're different.=20

BYERS: You know the way television works?=20

MULDER: Yeah, you click it on, you have a picture.=20

LANGLY: It's a rapid series of still pictures fired against the = tube.=20

BYERS: There's something non-standard here...=20

(He points to the second television, which also now has the distorted l= ines=20 at the bottom.)=20

...in the vertical blanking interval, information that's being added in= to the=20 spaces between the still pictures.=20

MULDER: What kind of information?=20

BYERS: We don't know.=20

LANGLY: This is as far as we could get with this equipment.=20

MULDER: Well, can you take it apart?=20

LANGLY: Not without destroying it completely. That's by design.= =20

(They all look at the strange device.)=20

BYERS: An amazingly sophisticated design, but all we can say for= sure=20 is...=20

MULDER: This device is emitting a signal.=20




SCENE 10=20

(Mulder is driving down the road. He picks up his phone and starts to d= ial=20 when the phone rings. He clicks another button and puts it to his ear.)=20

MULDER: Mulder.=20

(Cut to Scully, who is sitting in her hotel room with the lights out,=20 watching a videotape from the crime scene.)=20

SCULLY: Where are you?=20

MULDER: I was just about to call you.=20

(Cut back to Mulder.)=20

Look, I'm on my way back. You may have been right, Scully, at least par= tly. I=20 think there is a foreign signal being introduced into these people's homes= =20 through the television set.=20

(Cut to Scully, who sits in silence.)=20

Scully, are you there?=20

SCULLY: I'm here.=20

MULDER: I think they may be running some kind of test.=20

(Cut back to Mulder, who receives no answer.)=20

Scully, did you hear what I just said?=20

(Cut to Scully.)=20

SCULLY: So, you had it analyzed?=20

MULDER: Yeah.=20

(Scully nods.)=20

SCULLY: I just talked to Agent Pendrell, he said that you never = showed=20 up.=20

MULDER: I didn't take it over to Pendrell.=20

SCULLY: Then where were you?=20

MULDER: Look, I'd, I'd rather talk about it when we get on the l= and=20 line, okay? We've dealt with these kind of people before. We know what the= y're=20 capable of.=20

(Scully hears a click.)=20

(She slams the phone down. Cut to Mulder, who starts to dial another nu= mber.=20 The hotel phone rings and Scully stares at it. She grabs the wall cord and= rips=20 it out of the wall. She then unscrews the receiver and looks for something= =20 suspicious. After hearing a few clicks, she gasps and looks around the roo= m. Her=20 eyes move to the lamp, which she looks under, ripping the bottom cushionin= g off.=20 She then reaches under the table and feels around. Finding nothing, she lo= oks=20 over to the wall and rips off sheet after sheet of paper on the ironing bo= ard,=20 desperately searching for the wiretap. She then unscrews the wall socket a= nd=20 looks inside of that. As her agitation and fear grows, she throws over ano= ther=20 table, breaking various things and knocking over the phone, and looks unde= r it.=20 Then, she rips off the heat control and looks in that. Going into the bath= room,=20 she stands on a chair and undoes the giant light bulb. Fining nothing, she= =20 searches behind the television and yanks out the cord. As she stands, she = knocks=20 over piles and piles of recovered videotapes. Looking around, the room see= ms=20 shaky. The curtains repeatedly "short out." Outside, she hears a car pull = up and=20 the headlights shine through the window. She gasps and ducks, then goes to= the=20 door and listens in, hearing two men talking outside.)=20

MULDER: Here, she's in here. Ready?=20

(The proprietor unlocks the door.)=20

PROPREITOR: Ready. On the count...=20

(Scully chain-locks the door.)=20

MULDER: Wait...=20

(Mulder bangs on the door and Scully stumbles back, startled. Breathing= =20 heavily, she walks over, picks up her gun and aims it at the door. As the= =20 proprietor opens the door, he is stopped by the chain-lock. Scully fires s= ix=20 shots at him. She then runs the other way as Mulder kicks open the door.)= =20

Get back, call the police.=20

(The proprietor runs off to do so. Mulder looks around the disheveled m= otel=20 room.)=20

Scully! Scully!=20

(He kicks open another door to find that the back door is wide open and= =20 Scully is nowhere to be found.)=20

MAY 1; 6:04 AM=20

(Pictures of all of Margaret Scully's children sit on a table. The phon= e=20 rings, and Margaret wakes up, turns on the lamp and answers it.)=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Hello?=20

(Cut to Mulder, who stands in the motel room, which is being scoured by= =20 F.B.I. agents.)=20

MULDER: Mrs. Scully, hi, it's Fox Mulder.=20

(Cut back to Margaret.)=20

MARGARET SCULLY: What is it, what's the matter?=20

(Cut to Mulder.)=20

MULDER: I was hoping that you'd heard from Dana.=20

(Cut to Margaret.)=20

MARGARET SCULLY: No. Has something happened?=20

MULDER: I'm... I'm not exactly sure.=20

(Cut to Mulder.)=20

There's... there's some confusion here. She's missing.=20

(Cut back to Margaret as she sits up in bed.)=20

(The two men talking to Skinner walk off.)=20

This manhunt is being conducted as if we're searching for an escaped co= nvict.=20

MULDER: I appreciate that, but these officers should be instruct= ed not=20 to confront her once they find her.=20

(Mulder slowly tapes an "X" to his window and starts dribbling his=20 basketball. The phone rings and Mulder sits down and picks it up.)=20

(Cut to the Lone Gunman's office, where Frohike is on the phone and Bye= rs is=20 in the back. Langly is standing next to Frohike.)=20

FROHIKE: Mulder, we pulled something off that videotape you foun= d in=20 Scully's room.=20

(Byers walks towards his compatriots. Cut to Mulder.)=20

MULDER: What is it?=20

(Cut to Frohike. Byers starts to flip through a file.)=20

FROHIKE: Something interesting... but we don't want to talk abou= t=20 it...=20

(Cut to Mulder.)=20

...over the phone. "Big Brother" may be listening.=20

(Frohike, Byers, Langly and Mulder congregate around a videotape player= .=20 Frohike speeds through the videotape while it is playing on fast-forward,= =20 showing a psychic network commercial.)=20

FROHIKE: Here's the tape Scully was reviewing last night. We sca= nned=20 samples of the tape onto disk.=20

LANGLY: Digitized it.=20

BYERS: Using some interpolating freeware we pulled off the net, = we=20 were able to blank out visible frames.=20

(Mulder pulls up in the parking lot and stops the car. He rubs his fore= head,=20 then slowly unbuckles his seatbelt and gets out. He starts towards the cor= oner's=20 office when the Plain-Clothed Man pulls up.)=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: Get in.=20

MULDER: I can't talk to you right now.=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: They're watching you. Now, get in before you = get us=20 both killed.=20

MULDER: That's an interesting choice of words. My partner may be= dead.=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: It's not my concern.=20

MULDER: The hell it isn't! We're here because of you!=20

(The Plain-Clothed Man looks around.)=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: Keep your voice down.=20

MULDER: Who are you, who do you work for?=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: You're wasting time. While you're chasing you= r=20 partner, they're destroying the evidence.=20

MULDER: Who?=20

PLAIN-CLOTHED MAN: Just follow the evidence. If you don't, by=20 tomorrow, the responsible parties will be out of your reach.=20

(Mulder kicks the door and walks towards the coroner's office as his=20 erstwhile informant drives off. Mulder makes his way towards the coroner, = who=20 stands next to a set of blinds.)=20

CORONER: State highway patrolman found the body off a rural high= way at=20 2:00 P.M. Nude, shot in the forehead.=20

(Mulder closes his eyes. The coroner grabs the blind drawstring.)=20

Are you ready?=20

MULDER: Let me do that.=20

(The coroner steps back and Mulder pulls open the blinds and looks insi= de at=20 the redhead on the table. He stares at the body.)=20

It's not her.=20

(He starts off.)=20

Somebody has to call her mother.=20

CORONER: We already tried.=20

(Mulder turns around.)=20

We weren't able to reach her.=20

MULDER: She's not answering her phone?=20

(The coroner shrugs slightly. Mulder walks off.)=20




SCENE 15
MARGARET SCULLY'S HOUSE=20

(Mulder taps the knocker three times, waits, then does it again louder.= =20 Having no response, he looks at the window, peers in, then bangs the knock= er=20 four times. Margaret answers the door, but only enough so that her face is= =20 shown.)=20

MULDER: Mrs. Scully, is she here?=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Uh, no.=20

MULDER: You haven't been answering your phone.=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Well, when I hear from her, I'll call you, okay= ?=20

(She tries to close the door, but Mulder holds it open.)=20

MULDER: I need to see her.=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Fox, please, go away...=20

(He pushes his way past her.)=20

MULDER: Sorry.=20

(She closes the door and he walks down the foyer and looks in the main = room.=20 Seeing no one, he turns to Margaret.)=20

(Scully steps out from behind the wall in the main room, aiming her gun= at=20 Mulder. Mulder turns around.)=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Dana, put down the gun!=20

MULDER: I'm here to help you, Scully.=20

(Margaret walks over and stands next to Mulder.)=20

SCULLY: I told you, Mom. He's here to kill me.=20

MULDER: I'm on your side, you know that.=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Put it down, Dana.=20

MULDER: Scully, listen to me very carefully. You don't know it, = but=20 you're sick with the same thing that drove those other people to murder...= and=20 whatever you think may be happening...=20

(He takes a step forward.)=20

SCULLY: Just step back.=20

(She cocks the hammer. Margaret steps up next to Mulder.)=20

MARGARET SCULLY: Dana, you're not yourself. He's telling you the= =20 truth.=20

SCULLY: It's not the truth, Mom. He's lied to me from the beginn= ing.=20

(Mulder shakes his head slightly.)=20

He's never trusted me.=20

MULDER: Scully, you are the only one I trust.=20

(Scully is about to cry.)=20

SCULLY: You're in on it. You're one of them. You're one of the p= eople=20 who abducted me. You put that thing in my neck. You killed my sister!=20

MARGARET SCULLY: That's not true, Dana.=20

(Margaret steps in front of Mulder.)=20

(Scully is fighting back tears, her gun trained on her mother now.)=20

(Scully stares at them, very distraught. They look very concerned. Marg= aret=20 steps towards her daughter.)=20

(Scully points her gun away as she and her mother press their foreheads= =20 against one another. Scully falls into her mother's arms, sobbing. Margare= t and=20 Dana kneel down to the floor as Dana cries.)=20

NORTHEAST GEORGETOWN MEDICAL CENTER; MAY 2; 1:43 PM=20

(Mulder walks down the hallway as people walk past him. He gets to the = door=20 to a hospital room, knocks and opens it. Margaret, standing next to the ho= spital=20 bed where Scully is laying, looks at him and smiles. He puts his hands up = as if=20 having a gun pointed at him and smiles. Margaret walks past him, smiling.)= =20

TELEVISION NEWSCASTER: ...runway 12-H. The runway generally rese= rved=20 for...=20

(Mulder turns off the television and sits down in a chair next to Scull= y.)=20

MULDER: How you feeling?=20

SCULLY: Ashamed.=20

(Mulder crosses his legs.)=20

I was so sure, Mulder. I saw things and I heard things, and... it was j= ust=20 like world was turned upside-down. Everybody was out to get me.=20

MULDER: Now you know how I feel most of the time.=20

SCULLY: I thought you were going to kill me.=20

(She looks at him, confused. He leans in.)=20

MULDER: What, uh, course of treatment have you outlined for Agen= t=20 Scully?=20

LORENZ: At this point, nothing more than bed rest. We still have= n't=20 been able to determine what brought this on. As far as I can tell, there's= =20 nothing medically wrong with her.=20

MULDER: That didn't seem to be the case last night.=20

LORENZ: No, it wasn't. It's got me puzzled. Her M.R.I. was negat= ive,=20 but the spinal tap revealed high levels of serotonin in her brain.=20

MULDER: You think that would account for her strange behavior?=20

LORENZ: High serotonin levels have been associated with mania. B= ut the=20 good news is, as of this afternoon, her levels are pretty much back to nor= mal.=20

(She smiles and walks past him. Mulder thinks for a second, then turns= =20 around.)=20

(He stops walking. Cut to the psychiatric hospital, where the phone rin= gs at=20 a clerk's desk. She picks up the phone.)=20

NURSE: Ward three.=20

(Cut back to Mulder.)=20

MULDER: Yeah, this is Fox Mulder with the Federal Bureau of=20 Investigation. I need to talk to Doctor Stroman, please.=20

(Cut back to the nurse.)=20

NURSE: I'm sorry, Doctor Stroman's no longer here. I believe he'= s=20 returned to Washington.=20

(Cut to Mulder.)=20

MULDER: You know where I can reach him?=20

(Cut to the nurse.)=20

NURSE: Um, I'm not sure... he left us a local number.=20

(Cut back to Mulder.)=20

(Mulder pulls out a pack of matches from the 2400 motel and looks at it= . On=20 top, he sees a phone number.)=20

(Cut to the nurse.)=20

2400 COURT MOTEL=20

(The proprietor unlocks the door to the motel room.)=20

MULDER: You want me to go first this time?=20

PROPRIETOR: You're damn straight.=20

(Mulder takes out his gun, waits for a second, then kicks open the door= . He=20 walks in, pointing his gun. The room is a mess. The proprietor walks in be= hind=20 him as he puts his gun away and starts looking through the covers.)=20

I haven't had a chance to clean the room yet. He just checked out. What= with=20 all the excitement, I don't blame him.=20

(Mulder walks around the bed and looks through the drawers of a dresser= when=20 he sees the phone and stands up.)=20

MULDER: You charge for local calls?=20

PROPRIETOR: Of course.=20

MULDER: You'd have a record of all calls made...=20

PROPRIETOR: I'll get it for you.=20

(He walks out. Mulder looks into the kitchen and sees an ashtray. Walki= ng in,=20 he looks down at the ashtray and sees a lone cigarette butt. Picking it up= , he=20 sees it is Morley's. He throws it down into the ashtray in disgust as the= =20 proprietor walks in with a sheet.)=20

(Mulder walks back over to the front door and takes it.)=20

(He reads it over.)=20

(Mulder pulls up to a house, parks the car and gets out. He starts towa= rds=20 the house, but stops and puts his hand on a blue car parked out front, the= n goes=20 over to the door. He hears a car behind him and sees the cable van pulling= up.=20 Mulder quickly goes into the bushes directly in front of the house and wat= ches=20 as the cable technician walks into the house. Mulder, kneeling, makes his = way=20 over to the other side of the window and looks in to see Stroman and the=20 technician talking.)=20

CABLE TECHNICIAN: That's what he told me, Stroman.=20

STROMAN: Then where is he? He said he'd be here by now.=20

CABLE TECHNICIAN: He'll be here.=20

(Stroman looks at his watch.)=20

STROMAN: It's almost seven o'clock.=20

(He walks over to the window and peers out as Mulder leans back against= the=20 wall adjacent to it so as not to be seen. Stroman looks around, then walks= back=20 over to the technician.)=20

There's no sign of him.=20

(Mulder scurries around to the back of the house, skulking quietly. As = he=20 approaches the back door, two shots ring out. He quickly takes out his gun= and=20 breaks open the door with his shoulder, gun pointed out. He makes his way = to the=20 main room and sees that Stroman and the technician are both dead. Stroman = was=20 shot in the forehead. He bends down and next to the body and checks the pu= lse,=20 then the technician's. X steps out.)=20

X: You're too late, Agent Mulder.=20

(Mulder aims his gun, but, seeing who it is, points it away, disgusted.= )=20

MULDER: Now that you've destroyed all the evidence.=20

X: You were told this would happen. You made your choice.=20

MULDER: I just didn't know I was working for you.=20

X: I had no alternative. I was being watched too closely. I coul= dn't=20 risk compromising myself.=20

MULDER: Why kill them if you wanted me to expose them?=20

(X steps closer.)=20

X: Those were always my orders, Agent Mulder. I was just hoping = you'd=20 get to them first.=20

(X bends down and puts the murder weapon into the technician's hand.)=20

(Mulder sits across from Skinner in Skinner's office. Skinner is readin= g over=20 a document.)=20

SKINNER: This is your final report, Agent Mulder?=20

MULDER: Yes, sir.=20

SKINNER: I see more questions than I do answers. You don't know = who=20 manufactured the device you found or what its purpose was.=20

MULDER: No, sir.=20

(Scully knocks on the door and walks in.)=20

SKINNER: Agent Scully, welcome back.=20

(She walks over to the desk.)=20

SCULLY: I'm sorry I'm late, I just got back from the document se= ction.=20

SKINNER: What did you find out about the two men Mulder found=20 executed?=20

SCULLY: The cable company employee had no criminal record. In fa= ct,=20 there was nothing remarkable about him whatsoever. We found a medical lice= nse=20 under the name "Doctor Stroman" in Falls Church, Virginia. He died in 1978= .=20

SKINNER: What about their killer?=20

(Scully shrugs and is about to speak when Mulder cuts her off.)=20

MULDER: He remains an unknown subject.=20

(Skinner looks at him, slightly suspicious of Mulder's answer.)=20

ALLEY=20

(X walks down a dark alley over to a car. He looks around then gets in = the=20 passenger side as the car turns on. In the driver's seat is the=20 Cigarette-Smoking Man, smoking. They do not look at each other for a few=20 seconds.)=20

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN: Have you completed your work?=20
